Top China diver injures neck during HK exhibition
2000-10-29
HONG KONG - Top Chinese diver Xiong Ni, who scooped two golds in the Sydney Games, suffered a light neck injury during a diving exhibition in Hong Kong on Sunday. Xiong hit his head against the thigh of a fellow diver in the pool after executing a stunt which involved a line of divers leaping off a three-metre springboard in quick succession. "His head hit another diver's thigh and that hurt his neck," a Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association official said on Monday. Xiong was quickly bundled off to the hospital and later discharged wearing a neckbrace. "The doctor said he pulled a neck muscle," the official said. "It's not very serious." Xiong retained his Olympic three-metre springboard crown and won the men's synchronised three-metre springboard gold medal in Sydney in September. He is among a group of about 20 top Chinese divers who are in Hong Kong to give three performances. They depart on Tuesday. Reuters
