TAIPEI, Taiwan - Taiwanese pop diva Chang Hui-mei will compete against Hong Kong mega star Karen Mok and China's newcomer Na Ying for best female artist at Saturday's 14th annual Golden Melody Awards - one of the Chinese-language music industry's most prestigious honors.

Chang - also known as A-mei - won the award last year, and her album ``Fever'' has also been nominated in the best-record category at this year's ceremony at National Taiwan University's Sports Stadium in the capital, Taipei.

But the energetic Mok, with her hit album ``i,'' and Na's ``If Now ...,'' could end A-mei's dominance. Na is a rare nominee from China in the Golden Melody Awards, usually crowded with stars from Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The king of Taiwanese R&B, Jay Chou, is hoping to add a new award to his long list of honors by taking home the Golden Melody as best producer for his CD release ``The Eight Dimensions.''

The multitalented Chou has also been nominated for best record - which he won last year for ``Fantasy'' - and best songwriter.

``Having him win the best record award would be a confirmation of what everybody already knows,'' said music writer Allen Hwang, describing Chou as the biggest singer to come out of Taiwan since A-mei.

But music critic Jason Tu said that if the jury wants to go for a tougher modern sound, it will choose Liu Shao-chi over Chou.

Liu's album ``Night Funk'' is up for a best album award, with Liu himself also nominated as producer of the year.

``His language could work against him,'' said Tu, noting that Liu sings in Hakka, a language spoken by an ethnic Chinese minority with communities in Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and other parts of Asia.

The Golden Melody also recognizes the best Hakka singer, which includes Liu in this year's nomination.

The nominees for best male performers include Hong Kong superstar Jacky Cheung for ``Where is He,'' and retro Taiwanese singer Fei Yu-ching, who recreates the feel of old Shanghai on his album ``Back in Style.'' AP
