1999-05-24
BEIJING - Paralyzed gymnast Sang Lan returned to China today, met by teammates bearing bouquets of flowers and officials who praised her as the pride of all Chinese.``I'm very happy to finally be home after ten months so far away. I thank everybody for all their help and attention,'' the 17-year-old Sang told an airport news conference from a wheelchair. ``She's approached her problems like a super woman,'' said Zhang Faqiang, vice director of China's deputy head of the State Sports General Administration. ``She's the pride of all Chinese.'' Zhang said the administration will continue to oversee her rehabilitation and hopes to get her involved in sports activities for the handicapped. Sang, a member of the Chinese national gymnastics team, severely injured her neck doing warm-up exercises during the Goodwill Games in Uniondale, N.Y., in July.
