Gladiator, Crouching Tiger battle for UK film awards

LONDON - Chinese martial-arts fable "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and the Roman epic "Gladiator" each earned 14 nominations on Wednesday for the Bafta awards, Britain's equivalent of the Oscars, Reuters reported. The Bafta winners will be announced on February 25 this year, a month before the Academy Awards and in time to influence the glittering Hollywood ceremony. Among its nominations, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was shortlisted for best film, best director for Ang Lee, and best actress for its star Michelle Yeoh. "Gladiator," tipped as a hot Academy Award contender, scored Bafta nods for best film, best actor for Russell Crowe and best director. The best film shortlist includes: "Almost Famous," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," "Erin Brockovich," "Gladiator" and British-made hit "Billy Elliot," which earned a total of 11 Bafta nominations. Battling Russell Crowe for the best actor award are Michael Douglas for "Wonder Boys," Tom Hanks for "Cast Away," Geoffrey Rush for "Quills" and "Billy Elliot's" young star, Jamie Bell. The best actress category is also studded with stars: Juliette Binoche ("Chocolat"), Kate Hudson ("Almost Famous"), Julia Roberts ("Erin Brockovich") and Hilary Swank ("Boys Don't Cry" and "Michelle") will vye for the honour with Michelle Yeoh. "This year's race is truly international and one of the most open in recent memory," said Bafta chairman Simon Relph. "Our move to go before the American Academy Awards has greatly increased national and international interest," he said.
