China beats Indonesia for men's badminton gold
2000-09-23
SYDNEY - China won three golds on Saturday, including the prestigious men's badminton final, to run its total to 17 after just one week of Olympic competition, exceeding the number for the entire Atlanta Olympics. China's victories came at the expense of its Asian neighbours, especially Indonesia, which had placed high expectations on the badminton final won by Ji Xinpeng. Ji beat Indonesia's Hendrawan, the number two seed, 15-4 15-13, the last in a string of top players he upset on his way to the podium, including number one seed Taufik Hidayat, also of Indonesia. China won the women's double gold when Ge Fei and Gu Jun, the defending Olympic champions, beat compatriots Gao Ling and Qin Yiyuan in just 35 minutes. Overall, China took four badminton golds after earlier successes in women's singles and the mixed doubles. Only Indonesia's Tony Gunawan and Candra Wijaya broke the stranglehold, taking the men's doubles on Thursday.
