Elton John lets sun go down on Vegas stint
2009-02-04
LAS VEGAS, Nevada (AFP) - Elton John is letting the sun go down on his long-running show at Las Vegas's Caesars Palace on April 22, the famous resort confirmed Wednesday. Tickets for the British singer-songwriter's final 12 performances of "The Red Piano" -- a lavish 90-minute spectacle in which the 61-year-old legend croons his classics -- will go on sale on Thursday. The April 22 show will be the 241st performance of "The Red Piano," which launched in 2004 with a three-year commitment that was stretched to five. It has been a consistent sell-out. John was the second A-list act to occupy the 4,000-seat Colosseum at Caesars Palace made famous by Celine Dion?s five-year residency. With John's departure, Bette Midler and Cher are the mammoth showroom?s sole regular headliners. "Elton John is an icon in the music industry with international stature as not only a performer but a gifted songwriter," Caesars Palace president Gary Selesner said in a statement. "We are grateful to Elton and his talented band for bringing so many memorable performances to Caesars Palace." John has sold more than 250 million records worldwide, with 29 consecutive Top 40 Hits and 35 gold and 25 platinum albums. In recent years, John has seemed weary of his tightly scripted Las Vegas stint. He told CNN?s Larry King last year there are times during the show he wonders how much time was left but that he remains inspired and enthusiastic while performing more traditional -- and more spontaneous -- concerts. He is scheduled to tour the US this spring with Billy Joel and to appear in concert in Canada, Ireland, England and Germany this summer, according to EltonJohn.Com.
