China move closer to World Cup after win over Indonesia
2001-05-27
JAKARTA - China beat Indonesia 2-0 in Jakarta on Sunday to finish top of World Cup Asia Zone qualifying group nine and advance to the second round of qualification matches. Indonesia's defence held off the superior Chinese side until a 45th minute shot by striker Xie Hui, who took a pass from Wu Chengying, gave the visitors the lead moments before halftime, Reuters reported. Indonesia rallied early in the second half, but failed to capitalise on a number of chances to equalise. China's Wu then fired a shot from outside the penalty area in the 69th minute and the ball bounced over Indonesia goalkeeper Hendro Kartiko's shoulder to score China's second and seal the victory. The win takes China, who began the match with a three-point lead over Indonesia at the top of the group, to the second round. Underdogs Indonesia had earlier this month lost 5-1 to China and needed to beat coach Bora Milutinovic's side by more than five goals in Sunday's match to advance.
