Australian pop star Minogue talks of breast cancer ordeal
2006-07-15
Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue gave a message of hope for cancer sufferers when she talked for the first time publicly about her ordeal with the disease in a television interview, extracts of which were released. "It's like a bomb has dropped," the 38-year-old singer said of her experience, in an advance extract from the interview on Britain's Sky One channel to be broadcast on Sunday. "I was just completely thrown into another world," she added, referring to the moment she was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer while preparing for the Australian leg of her Showgirl tour in May 2005. Following the diagnosis she underwent surgery in Melbourne and chemotherapy treatment in Paris, where she was accompanied by her partner, the French actor Olivier Martinez. There were "days that I simply couldn't get up or could not do anything", she said. In extracts from the interview reported earlier by British media, Minogue said she was far from fully recovered from her breast cancer ordeal. Minogue, who was based in London for many years, came to prominence in the Australian television soap opera Neighbours and is now Australia's biggest pop star, having sold an estimated 40 million records worldwide. Her hits include "I Should Be So Lucky" (1988) and "I Believe in You" (2004). She appears in the television interview with short hair, a side-effect of her cancer treatment. "I know there'll be people who will see this, be watching this now, going through it," she said, referring to other cancer sufferers. "I love to say: you can get through it. You can." She is due in November to resume the world tour which was interrupted by the cancer diagnosis.
