China's Teng wins men's pommel horse Olympics gold
2004-08-22
ATHENS - Teng Haibin maintained a perfect bodyline to swivel his way to the Olympic men's pommel horse title on Sunday and hand China their first gymnastics gold medal of the Athens Games.Mounting the pommel with his eyes locked on the apparatus, Teng rotated with ease and punched his fists up into the air as he nailed his solid dismount and earned 9.837. "I'm very excited, it was very important for us to win today," said Teng. Defending champion Marius Urzica of Romania finished second while Takehiro Kashima of Japan won bronze. A clearly disappointed Urzica took a swipe at the judges as he exited the Olympic Indoor Hall. "I feel sorry for losing the gold medal, but in the end it was a decision the judges made," he said. "I think that my routine was more difficult than that of the Chinese gymnast." American Paul Hamm, the controversial all-round champion, once again walked away empty handed in sixth place.
