2006-01-10
Acclaimed Hollywood and Broadway stage actors Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane were honored with twin stars laid into the pavement on Hollywood's prestigious Walk of Fame. The pair, who starred in the stage version as well as the new film remake of Mel Brooks's "The Producers," were awarded the 2,299th and 2,300th stars on the famous strip of sidewalk in front of about 100 of the comedy duo's fans. "I really, really am touched and I appreciate it," said Broderick, whose celebrity wife Sarah Jessica Parker also attended the ceremony. Mel Brooks, who wrote the original 1968 film version of "The Producers," then adapted it into a hit Broadway musical in 2001, and then remade it again for the newest film version, also spoke at the glittering unveiling ceremony. The musical tells the story of two theatrical producers who plan to produce the biggest flop ever, believing they can make more money from a failure than a success. The plan backfires, however, when their play becomes an unexpected hit. Lane last month won a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of producer Max Bialystock in the new film, a role which won him a Tony Award on Broadway. Broderick also received a Tony nomination for his portrayal of Bialystock's partner, accountant Leo Bloom. Broderick, 43, has starred in such films as the 1986 cult favourite "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," as well as in hits such as "War Games," "The Stepford Wives" and "Godzilla". The 49-year-old Lane's movie credits include the 1986 blockbuster comedy "The Birdcage," "Addams Family Values," and "Frankie and Johnny." Broderick and Lane are currently starring in "The Odd Couple" on New York's Broadway.
