'N Sync's Lance and Joey Couple Up
2006-01-21
Lance Bass and Joey Fatone are saying bye bye bye toboy-bandhood and hello to reality television. Withchances of an 'N Sync reunion looking increasingly slim, the popstershave pinned their hopes to a new UPN project about their lives, billedas an update of The Odd Couple. Tentativelytitled Out of Sync, the comedy-reality hybrid will feature Fatoneas the slovenly Oscar character, and Bass as Felix, the neurotic neatguy. UPN President Dawn Ostroff said Thursday that theseries is in development for the fall. "They came tous," she said. "Joey and Lance are such fun, interesting people and theytruly are an odd couple--even if you sit in a room with them, it's Felixand Oscar in many ways." The original Odd Couplewas a Neil Simon Broadway show about two men separated from their wives, who move in together, despite their differences. It was later made intoboth an Oscar-winning film, starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Mathau, anda television series, starring Tony Randall and Jack Klugman It's unclear how closely Fatone and Bass plan to stick tothe plot line and whether cohabitation is in the cards. While Bass isstill single, Fatone traded vows with his longtime girlfriend, KellyBaldwin, in September 2004, and is the father of 5-year-old Brianna. Fatone and Bass previously teamed up for the 2001 romanticcomedy, On the Line. Fatone also appeared in My Big Fat GreekWedding and stage productions of Rent and Little Shop ofHorrors. Bass, meanwhile, spent a good chunk of hispost-Sync days attempting to get himself launched into orbit, a questthat was eventually nixed by Russia's space program. Though 'N Sync has never formally broken up, the band has been on anextended break since Justin Timberlake released his 2002 solo album,Justified. After achieving multiplatinum statuson his own, not to mention snagging himself a superstar girlfriend and ahandful of film roles, Timberlake is reportedly reluctant to consider areturn to boy-bander status. Just don't tell Bass, whoremains convinced that 'N Sync will rise again. "Itmight be five years from now, it might be a year from now, but we willdefinitely do some more music," he told MTV in June. We're not holding our breath.
