Call me an actress, not a star, says Sophia Loren
2002-09-14
TORONTO - Italian screen legend Sophia Loren may have made 100 films, been an international sex symbol for decades and even voted as the world's most beautiful woman, but don't call her a star. The 67-year-old actress, who won an Academy Award in 1962 for "Two Women," just wants to be called an actress. "A star is away from me. I always like to be with my feet on the ground and do the job as I have to do it," she told reporters at the Toronto International Film Festival. "It's a very great job, a very serious profession, so to be called a star, I don't like it. "I am an actress. A star and an actress are two different things." Loren stars in "Between Strangers," which tells the story of three women whose lives are marked by the lingering influence of their fathers. The film was written and directed by Loren's son Edoardo Ponti. The film makes its North American premiere at the Toronto film festival which runs until Sept. 14. Italy's most famous actress projects a decidedly frumpy image in her 100th film with her helmet of gray hair and sensible shoes. Asked by a reporter from a seniors magazine how she still manages to look good at her age, Loren replied: "I cannot answer you because I don't think you have my DNA." The actress noted that, as she has gotten older, she has become more selective in her roles, to ensure they fit her age and demeanor. Her last major film appearance was the 1995 comedy "Grumpier Old Men" with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. "You have to wait sometimes a longer time to be able to choose a film that fits your age and your personality because, otherwise, you become a caricature of yourself and that's very bad," she said. "I'm very happy with what I've done in my life, career and normal life, but I still think that I've so much to give and still have so much time to go on as an actor. "I want to do more and more for the movies because I was born as an actress...I still have that wonderful drive and enthusiasm that nobody will take it away from me, thank God, so I will go on and on and on and on." "Between Strangers" also stars American Mira Sorvino, Frenchman Gerard Depardieu and British actor Pete Postlethwaite. Reuters/Variety
