Italy's Bertolucci to get special Venice film festival award
2007-06-18
Italian film maker Bernardo Bertolucci will be awarded the Venice film festival's newly created special Golden Lion statuette for his work in September, organisers said on Monday. Bertolucci, 66, is "one of the greatest directors of contemporary cinema whose work, between poetry and history, has left a deep mark on modern cinema," the Venice Biennale foundation said in a statement. The Mostra, the world's oldest film festival, opens August 29. Bertolucci will be given the award during the closing ceremony on September 8. "We are proud that he accepted this unique award which is tied to the Mostra," Biennale president Davide Croff said. "Bertolucci had the courage to give a cosmopolitan dimension to his personal inspirations," he added. Bertolucci, who directed Marlon Brando in the 1972 film "Last Tango in Paris", made about 15 films during his 40 years in the business. Among the other films to his credit are "The Last Emperor" (1987) and "Little Buddha" (1993). Chinese director Zhang Yimou will head the festival's 64th edition which also marks the event's 75th anniversary. The Venice film festival, launched in 1932, was not staged during World War II and several festivals were held without films in competition. Bertolucci headed the festival's 50th anniversary in 1982.
