Australian ex soap star favourite to win jungle reality TV show
2006-11-08
Australian ex soap star Jason Donovan and the estranged husband of United States singer Liza Minnelli are among celebrities heading for the jungle in a British reality TV show, its makers said. Donovan is 2-1 favourite to win ITV's "I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here", while David Gest is the show's longest shot at 33-1, according to bookmakers Ladbrokes. The show, which has spawned US, German, French and Dutch versions, follows stars as they try to survive in the Australian jungle while performing tasks such as eating live insects. Viewers vote to evict celebrities as the show goes along and the winner is the one remaining at the end. The contestants raise money for charity. Donovan, who starred opposite singer Kylie Minogue in the soap opera "Neighbours" in the 1980s before launching a successful pop career, says he is considering a return to music when the show finishes. "I'm definitely not saying I'm going to storm the charts or anything but this is an opportunity for me," he said. Gest, meanwhile, insists he "can't wait" to spend up to three weeks with "no maid, no butler, no caviar". The 10 participants on the show, which starts Monday, also include the half sister of Prime Minister Tony Blair's wife Cherie, journalist Lauren Booth, who has been a vocal opponent of the war in Iraq.
