US star Edward Norton opens the 32nd festival of American cinema in the French seaside resort of Deauville with a showing of his film "The Illusionist".

The story of a magician in early-20th-century Vienna who falls in love with a woman of higher social status kicks off 10 days devoted to US movies, whch will see a screening of Oliver Stone's "World Trade Center", Brian de Palma's "The Black Dahlia" and former US vice president Al Gore's documentary on global warming, "An Inconvenient Truth."

Proceedings will conclude with "The Devil Wears Prada" in which Meryl Streep stars as the demanding, high-maintenance editor of a fashion magazine, a screen adaptation of the runaway bestseller.

Streep, who will arrive in the resort on September 9, also stars in director Robert Altman's latest movie "A Prairie Home Companion" which will be screened out of competition.

Stone's movie about September 11, 2001 which had a mixed reception at the Venice festival, will be the first major event of the festival. It is based on the story of two policemen who escaped from the wreckage of the Trade Centre.

They will be at the showing with Stone.

On Sunday "The Black Dahlia", which opened the Venice fest and is the adaptation of a James Ellroy novel, will be screened in the presence of de Palma, Ellroy and the two leading actors Josh Hartnett and Aaron Eckhart.

Gore's warning on global warming will be shown in the documentary section.

The jury headed by French director Nicole Garcia will be choosing from among 11 films, including "A Guide To Recognising Your Saints" produced by the singer Sting, who will be in the Normandy town Tuesday, "The Oh in Ohio" starring Liza Minelli and Danny de Vito, and "Twelve and Holding" directed by Michael Cuesta.

This year's guest of honour is Sydney Pollack with a showing of his latest work, "Sketches of Frank Gehry", as well as past masterpieces "Jeremiah Johnson" and "Out of Africa".

Among stars dropping in during the 10 days of the festival will be Emmanuelle Beart, Jonathan Demme, Vin Diesel, Darren Aronofsky, Emilio Estevez and Christian Slater.

Deauville will also pay homage to French director Claude Lelouch, who thrust the town into the international spotlight when he set his 1966 Oscar-winning film "A Man and a Woman" in the resort, by naming a square after him.
