Cannes jury a band of friends, says French director
2006-05-25
Cannes jury members are getting on like a house on fire and enjoying their task of judging some 20 films competing for the coveted Palme d'Or, jury member Patrice Leconte told AFP. "We are getting on really well as a group ... there is a lot of good humour, fun, lightness, pleasure and enthusiasm," he said at a party late Wednesday given by StudioCanal and attended by jury president Hong Kong director Wong Kar-Wai. "When I agreed to take part, I had some sleepless nights because it's embarrassing to judge others. But since we've started, I love it. It's still embarrassing, but we are a group," added the French director. "There are some films that I love and some I don't like at all, but it's a real pleasure to be able to talk spontaneously and calmly about them with people who are in the same business as me." Leconte said that after seeing a film, the jury retired to discuss it while it was still fresh in their minds. "It's like talking to my friends, even though it's Wong Kar-Wai, Tim Roth and the others," he said. Also on the jury are Italian actress Monica Bellucci, British actress Helena Bonham Carter, US actor Samuel L. Jackson, Argentine director Lucrecia Martel, Palestinian director Elia Suleiman and Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi. They are due to deliver their verdict on Sunday.
