Pavarotti scraps 2006 concerts because of cancer surgery
2006-07-07
Famed Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti has cancelled all his remaining farewell concerts scheduled for this year after undergoing cancer surgery, his manager said in London. Pavarotti, 70, who has already called off several concerts on his world tour this year, needs time to recover and will undergo treatment over the next few months instead. He was preparing to leave New York last week to restart his performances in Britain when doctors, worried about results from a routine medical check-up, sent him back to hospital for an assessment. "Mr Pavarotti underwent a diagnostic evaluation and a malignant pancreatic mass was identified. Fortunately, the mass was able to be completely removed at surgery," his manager Terri Robson said on Friday. The opera star is recovering well and his doctors are encouraged by his physical and emotional resilience, a message to AFP from Robson's office stated. It added that Pavarotti Worldwide Farewell Tour -- consisting of 40 concerts celebrating the career of the great tenor, which began in 2005 -- could resume next year. Pavarotti was set to start his four-date tour of Britain in Glasgow on July 5. He was then to perform at Chatsworth House on July 8, Southampton Rose Bowl on July 12 and Warwick Castle on July 15. In April, he scrapped eight concerts after injuring his back and the following month he postponed five North American concerts because of complications with his back surgery. Pavarotti began singing in a church choir as child and went on to become one of the world's most successful classical music artists. Pavarotti, Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo, as the world famous Three Tenors, became a worldwide phenomenon with a series of concerts in the 1990s that spawned one of the biggest selling CDs of all time and helped to broaden the public's interest in classical music.
