Jack Palance, Hollywood 'bad guy', dies at 87

US actor Jack Palance, celebrated for his "bad guy" Hollywood roles, died in California at 87, his spokesman told AFP. "Jack Palance passed away ... of natural causes at home in Montecito, California, surrounded by his family," Dick Guttman said in a statement. Palance was born Walter Palahnuik on February 18, 1919, in Lattimer Mines, Pennsylvania. His survivors include his second wife, Elaine Rogers Palance and daughters Holly Palance and Brook Palance Wilding. A memorial service will be held December 16, Guttman said, and contributions may be sent to the Penn State University Hazelton campus in lieu of flowers. Palance won an Oscar in 1991 as best supporting actor in "City Slickers". His rugged face and gravelly voice worked in his favor when in 1947 he replaced Anthony Quinn, then Marlon Brando, in the Broadway production of "A Streetcar Named Desire" directed by Elia Kazan.
