2007-09-11
Arnaz Battle scored on a one-yard run with 22 seconds remaining to lift the San Francisco 49ers to a 20-17 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Monday. San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith, who had been ineffective for much of the game, led the 49ers on an 86-yard scoring drive to clinch victory. The third-year quarterback completed 15 of 31 passes for 126 yards in the game with 60 of them coming on the final drive. Matt Leinart had put Arizona ahead 17-13 with 6:40 remaining on a five-yard pass to Anquan Boldin. Leinart was 14 of 28 for 102 yards. San Francisco's Frank Gore scored for the game's first touchdown on a six-yard, first-quarter run. Arizona had the next 10 points with Edgerrin James rushing seven yards to give the Cardinals a 10-7 lead with 9:10 to go in the first half. The 49ers' Joe Nedney kicked a 33-yard field goal six minutes later to tie the score. Nedney added a 30-yard field goal in the third quarter for a 13-10 San Francisco lead. James led all rushers with 92 yards on 26 carries. (Writing by Gene Cherry in Salvo, North Carolina)
