Slovakia's Handzus to miss remainder of NHL season
2006-10-23
Slovakia's Michal Handzus was injured in Saturday's Chicago Blackhawks' game and will miss the remainder of the National Hockey League season. The giant 1.93m, 98kg forward, who was traded from Philadelphia to Chicago two months ago, is out for the season with a torn ACL. Handzus had played in only eight games for Chicago, recording a pair of goals and five assists. He was hit and injured in the third period of Saturday's game against the St. Louis Blues. Selected in the fourth round of the 1995 draft by St. Louis, Handzus entered the season with 111 goals and 180 assists in 509 career games with St. Louis, Phoenix and the Flyers. Handzus represented his country at the 2002 Winter Olympics and also helped Slovakia capture its first gold medal at the World Championship that year. The bad news for Chicago doesn't stop with Handzus as goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin suffered a broken ring finger Saturday and will be out indefinitely.
