Manning lead Giants to fourth win in a row
2007-10-16
Eli Manning passed for two touchdowns and 303 yards to help the New York Giants crush the Atlanta Falcons 31-10 to register their fourth successive win on Monday. Manning connected on 27 of 39 passes in the one-sided win for the Giants (4-2), who dominated play against the lowly Falcons (1-5). So effective was Manning that he completed 12 passes in a row at one stretch in the first half. "Guys were getting open, the offensive line was protecting and we were getting the ball out quickly," said Manning, adding that he had set himself a goal of achieving 11-consecutive completions in an NFL game. "It was a good win for us," he told reporters. Manning, the brother of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, hit Amani Toomer with a five-yard scoring strike in the first quarter. He then connected with Plaxico Burress on a 43-yard pass play to put the Giants ahead 21-10 in the second. The catch was the eighth touchdown reception of the season for Burress, who had missed practice this week because of an ankle injury. "Plaxico did a great job of getting open," Manning said. "He did a great move (on the safety) and got into the end zone and made a good catch." Burress had six catches in the game for 91 yards. Manning also completed seven tosses to Toomer for 89 yards and five to Jeremy Shockey for 63 yards. The Giants also scored on a one-yard run by Reuben Droughns in the first quarter. In the fourth, they added a 32-yard field goal by Lawrence Tynes and a nine-yard run by Derrick Ward. Morten Andersen's 47-yard field goal and Jerious Norwood's 67-yard run sparked Atlanta to a 10-7 first-quarter lead before New York took control. So dominant were the Giants that they had the ball for 19 minutes more than the Falcons. Not even two interceptions and a fumble by Manning could hurt them. Falcons starting quarterback Joey Harrington was just 18 of 39 for 209 yards and was sacked four times. (Writing by Gene Cherry in Salvo, North Carolina)
