2007-07-14
The United States was eliminated from the FIFA Under-20 World Cup with a 2-1 overtime loss to Austria in the quarterfinals Saturday as Erwin Hoffer scored the go-ahead goal in the 105th minute, just two minutes after he entered the game. Josmer Altidore of the New York Red Bulls put the United States ahead in the 15th minute with his fourth goal of the tournament, scoring on a glancing downward header off a Freddy Adu cross. Rubin Okotie tied the score for the Austrians in the 43rd with his second goal, beating a defender to get the rebound of Sebastian Proedl's shot and putting the ball past goalkeeper Chris Seitz. The United States finished a man short after Anthony Wallace was ejected in the 104th minute for getting his second yellow card or the game. The ball bounced to Hoffer off the following free kick, and he poked it in from the near post for his third goal of the tournament. He also hit a post in the 118th minute. Hoffer, who plays for Rapid Vienna, entered as a sub in the second round against Gambia and scored the tiebreaking goal in a 2-1 victory. Referee Martin Hansson of Sweden handed out 12 yellow cards -- seven to the U.S. team and five to Austria. In Wednesday's semifinal, Austria plays the winner of Saturday's late game between Spain and the Czech Republic.
