2007-02-01
Mats Sundin scored his 20th goal of the season to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a 2-1 win over the Rangers in New York on Wednesday. The Leafs extended their string of solid results on the road, winning for the fourth time in five games away from home, to jump into a tie for seventh with Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh in the Eastern Conference. The Rangers sit two points back in 10th place. The top eight teams make the playoffs. Brendan Shanahan put the Rangers in front at 12:07 in the second period before Alexei Ponikarovsky tied the game on the powerplay 90 seconds later. Leafs netminder Andrew Raycroft kept the Rangers at bay before club captain Sundin scored the gamewinner at 6:32 in the third with a breakaway goal. Sundin's two-point game gave him 1,213 points in 1,201 NHL games over 16 seasons in the league. * Raffi Torres scored a pair of goals as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-2. * Travis Moen and Andy McDonald scored in the third period as the Anaheim Ducks rallied to beat the Phoenix Coyotes 2-1.
