Flyers snap six-game skid with win over Leafs
2007-12-28
A double strike from Joffrey Lupul took his tally to nine goals in eight games and helped the Philadelphia Flyers end a six-game losing streak with a 4-1 home win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday. "I feel if I keep getting those opportunities in the slot like that I can score," Lupul told reporters. "It's a product of me working hard and my line-mates working hard. If I keep getting chances, I can score out there." Jeff Carter put the Flyers ahead in the first period before Lupul scored his 14th goal of the season in the second to make it 2-0. Mats Sundin pulled a goal back for Toronto late in the period. Daniel Briere restored Philadelphia's two-goal cushion early in the third before Lupul closed out the scoring. Flyers netminder Marty Biron made 34 saves to claim the win. "We did a lot of great things tonight," Mike Richards, whose pass set up Lupul's second goal, told reporters. "We took care of our own zone first, we got the puck in deep, and we took care of our forecheck," Richards added. ADD "As a team it was just a great game for us." * The Ottawa Senators scored three goals in the second period en route to their third win in a row, a 5-2 home victory over the New York Islanders. Jason Spezza started the run with a powerplay goal and Daniel Alfredsson and Antoine Vermette followed with goals to give Ottawa a 3-0 lead. Bill Guerin had a pair of third-period goals for the Islanders. * Sergei Gonchar scored 1:33 into overtime off a Sidney Crosby assist to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 4-3 home win over the Washington Capitals. The assist was the 34th of the season for Crosby, who also aided on a goal earlier in the game. * Alex Kovalev and Andrei Markov each had a goal and an assist in the Montreal Canadiens' 5-2 road win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Canadiens led 5-0 before the Lightning scored. Montreal's Cristobal Huet made 28 saves for the victory. * Nathan Horton's two goals powered the Florida Panthers to their first victory in Atlanta in four years, a 5-3 win. Panthers netminder Tomas Vokoun stopped 38 shots as the Panthers ended a 10-game skid in Atlanta. Ilya Kovalchuk scored twice in the third period for the Thrashers for his league-leading 30th and 31st goals. * Valtteri Filppula scored the game's first two goals and the Detroit Red Wings ended the Colorado Avalanche's five-game home winning streak with a 4-2 victory. * Doug Weight's third-period goal gave the Anaheim Ducks a 2-1 road win over the Edmonton Oilers, who lost their fourth consecutive game.
