Last-gasp Crosby helps Penguins edge past Rangers
2006-10-13
Sidney Crosby scored a powerplay goal with four seconds left in regulation to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 6-5 win over the New York Rangers on Thursday. Crosby, who also picked up three assists, decided the seesaw battle when his centering pass from the right boards ricocheted off a player in front of the New York goal past netminder Henrik Lundqvist with just seconds to go. Ryan Whitney contributed a pair of goals to the Pittsburgh cause while Kristopher Letang, Michel Ouellet and rookie Jordan Staal, with a shorthanded effort, added singles as the Penguins won their road opener. "I asked our guys to find a way to win," Pittsburgh coach Michel Therrien told reporters. "This was the type of game where it got a little crazy, but we got the last shot and we got the win." Rangers captain Jaromir Jagr, Matt Cullen, Adam Hall, Michael Nylander and Brendan Shanahan with his fourth of the season, answered for New York. The game remained scoreless until the 3:23 mark of the second when Staal broke in alone to notch his first career NHL goal. After two periods the game remained deadlocked at 3-3, as the shootout continued into the third before Crosby sent the Madison Square Garden crowd home disappointed after notching his second of the season. MILESTONE WIN In East Rutherford, Brian Gionta scored a third period hat-trick and John Madden recorded the game winner in a shootout as the New Jersey Devils rallied past the Toronto Maple Leafs 7-6, to help netminder Martin Brodeur to a milestone win. Despite equalling a career worst by allowing five goals in the second period, Brodeur still skated off the ice with career win number 448 to move him past Terry Sawchuk into third place on the all-time list. Following an unsteady performance in the second, Brodeur was back at his best in the third shutting out the Maple Leafs while Gionta fired three straight goals to force overtime. Brodeur would not be beaten in the extra session and stopped three-of-four shooters in the shootout. Madden also had a pair of goals in regulation for the Devils while Sergei Brylin added a single. Matthew Stajan with a pair and Jeff O'Neill, Chad Kilger, Darcy Tucker and Alexei Ponikarovsky counted for the Maple Leafs. In St. Louis, the Blues delivered on owner Dave Checketts' promise by beating the Boston Bruins 3-2 in a shootout to notch their first win of the season. Checketts had promised a victory at their home opener but the Blues needed a goal from Lee Stempniak in the fourth round of the shootout to make good on their owner's word. Patrice Bergeron and Marc Savard had given Boston a 2-0 lead before the Blues rallied behind goals from Stempniak and Jamal Mayers. Muzi.com News
