Leafs solve Canadiens penalty kill to win 4-1
2007-01-28
The Toronto Maple Leafs downed the Montreal Canadiens 4-1 on Saturday, scoring three times on the powerplay against the league's fourth-ranked penalty killing unit. With the win, Toronto improved to 3-0-2 in the eight-game season series against their traditional rivals. Defenseman Pavel Kubina and Jeff O'Neill put the Leafs two goals ahead with powerplay strikes in the first period before Tomas Plekanec reduced the deficit to 2-1 early in the second, again with the man advantage. But with less than three minutes remaining in the period Mats Sundin restored Toronto's two-goal lead with a powerplay marker before Kubina ended the scoring with his second of the game early in the third period. Cristobal Huet made 25 saves for the Canadiens, who have lost six of their past eight road games. * Jason Krog's goal gave the New York Rangers a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. * The Ottawa Senators won for the seventh time in eight games, downing the Boston Bruins 3-1. * Alexander Semin had two goals as the Washington Capitals beat the Carolina Hurricanes 7-3. * The New York Islanders ended a four-game home winless streak by downing the Buffalo Sabres 5-3. * Ed Belfour made 29 saves as the Florida Panthers upset the New Jersey Devils 4-2.
