Hurricanes top Penguins despite Crosby's 200th career point
2007-03-03
Defending Stanley Cup champions Carolina regained some playoff momentum with a 3-2 home victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday, taking some of the shine off Sidney Crosby's record-breaking 200th career point. Crosby opened the scoring in the first period, a goal that saw him surpass Wayne Gretzky as the youngest player in league history to reach the 200-point milestone. The Penguins center did it at the age of 19 years 207 days, 140 days faster than Gretzky during the 1980-81 season. "It's nice," Crosby told reporters. "It's something I don't really think about a whole lot, but when it's brought up, it's a nice accomplishment. "I'm glad I got it done and can move on now," added Crosby, who has 66 goals and 134 assists in his two-year NHL career. Crosby's goal was the first in regulation in 15 games and he leads the NHL in points and assists. He has 27 goals this season. Scott Walker and Frantisek Kaberle put Carolina 2-1 ahead in the second period but Ryan Malone tied things up at 2-2 before the end of the period. Walker then netted his second of the game at 11:33 in the third period to seal the win, putting the Hurricanes into the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Hurricanes netminder Cam Ward stopped 22 shots for the victory. *The Atlanta Thrashers scored three third-period goals for a 4-2 home win over the Ottawa Senators. *Nicklas Lidstrom scored his 200th career goal as the Detroit Red Wings crushed the Chicago Blackhawks 6-2 in Detroit. *Jeff O'Neill scored the deciding shootout goal to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a 4-2 win over New Jersey. *Michael Ryan and Thomas Vanek each scored twice as the Buffalo Sabres moved into the NHL lead with an 8-5 home victory over the Montreal Canadiens.
