Four-goal rally lifts Blue Jackets over Ducks
2007-01-06
The Columbus Blue Jackets scored four consecutive goals in the final period to shock the NHL-leading Anaheim Ducks 4-3 on Friday. The visiting Blue Jackets trailed 3-0 early in the third before rallying to hand the injury-plagued Ducks their fourth consecutive loss. Andy McDonald's power play goal gave Anaheim a 1-0 advantage five minutes into the second period and Travis Moen doubled the lead nine minutes later. Teemu Selanne appeared to wrap up the Ducks' victory with a goal 1:36 into the third period. But the Blue Jackets had other ideas. Back-to-back strikes from Rostislav Klesla brought the Blue Jackets to within 3-2 at the 16:46 mark and Fredrik Modin tied the scores at 17:19. Manny Malhotra clinched the big comeback with 1:20 remaining in the game. Netminder Fredrik Norrena held Anaheim scoreless after Selanne's goal and blocked a penalty shot the Ducks forward in the closing seconds. He ended the night with 33 saves. * The Pittsburgh Penguins scored three goals in the second period to upset the Eastern Conference-leading Sabres 4-2. * Matt Cooke's overtime goal, his second of the game, gave Vancouver a 3-2 victory over Edmonton, as the Canucks won their sixth consecutive game. * Phoenix overcame a three-goal deficit to defeat the Atlanta Thrashers 5-4 in overtime for their fifth straight victory. Yanic Perreault got the game-winner. * Nashville scored five goals in the second period of an 8-3 victory over Chicago. (Writing by Gene Cherry in Salvo, North Carolina)
