LONDON (AFP) - Coldplay and Welsh singer-songwriter Duffy dominated the nominations for the 2009 Brit Awards, which also marked a comeback for classic metal with Iron Maiden and AC/DC among the nominees.

Duffy is nominated in the best British album, British breakthrough act, best British female solo artist and best British single categories, topping off an incredible year that saw her "Rockferry" become the best-selling album of 2008.

Coldplay goes head to head with Duffy in the best album category, alongside indie group Elbow, Radiohead and The Ting Tings, and is also nominated in the best British group, best British single and best British live act categories.

Iron Maiden's world tour has also secured a place for the veteran group in the best British live act category alongside Scouting for Girls and The Verve.

Bringing up the rear of the metal revival is AC/DC, whose long-awaited album "Black Ice" has been nominated for best international album alongside Fleet Foxes, The Killers, Kings of Leon and MGMT -- a quintet who also make up the best international group category.

Beck, Neil Diamond, Jay-Z, Kanye West and Seasick Steve are nominated for best international male solo artist, while Beyonce, Gabriella Cilmi, Katy Perry, Pink and Santogold are up for best international female solo artist.

Ian Brown, James Morrison, Paul Weller, The Streets and Will Young will battle it out for best British male solo artist, while Adele, Duffy, Beth Rowley, Estelle and M.I.A are nominated in the female category.

Adele and Duffy go head to head again in the best British breakthrough act category chosen by listeners of BBC Radio One, along with The Last Shadow Puppets, Scouting For Girls and Ting Tings.

The best single award is decided in a live vote on awards night, from nominees picked from the top 10 British singles by airplay and sales.

Coldplay, Adele, Alexandra Burke, Dizzee Rascal, Estelle, Duffy, Girls Aloud, Leona Lewis, Scouting for Girls and finalists from talent show The X-Factor are all up for the prize.

Florence & the Machine have already been announced the winner of the Critics' Choice Award, while the Pet Shop Boys take home the prize for outstanding contribution to music.

The awards will be announced at a ceremony on February 18.
