Cubs beat Rockies for sixth consecutive win
2007-06-28
Mark DeRosa's three-run homer and sharp pitching from Carlos Zambrano powered the Chicago Cubs to their sixth win in a row on Wednesday, a 6-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies. DeRosa gave the Cubs a 4-0 lead with his third-inning home run to left center while Zambrano posted his fourth win in five games as Chicago extended their longest win streak since a seven-game run in 2005. DeRosa went 2-for-4 in the game, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Zambrano (9-6) struck out eight batters in six innings. He gave up two runs and five hits. "He's pitching winning baseball right now, and quietly, he's got himself nine wins," Cubs manager Lou Piniella told reporters. Rookie Mike Fontenot had another big game, going 3-for-4 with a fourth-inning homer. "I didn't know that short men could hit the ball like that," Zambrano said teasingly of the 5-foot-8 Fontenot. "He hit the ball like a man. I feel happy for him." Fontenot is hitting .450 and has hit safely in 17 of 18 games since being called up from Triple-A team Iowa on June 9. "What he's doing is unbelievable," DeRosa told reporters. "To come up here and hit .400 -- that's not even fathomable, to be honest with you." Fontenot also had a single and a double and scored two runs. "I'm just trying to put good swings on balls," he told reporters. "I'm just trying to get good pitches, and I'm doing that, and balls have been flying." The Cubs, who trail National League Central leaders Milwaukee by 7 games, have won 16 of 26 games this month, the first time they have won that many in a month since 2005. They are currently one game under .500. *Greg Maddux gained his 340th career win, giving up one run and five hits in seven innings in the San Diego Padres's 4-2 road victory over the San Francisco Giants. The 41-year-old struck out four and walked one in improving to 7-4. Giants slugger Barry Bonds did not play. *Chipper Jones drove in four runs and the Atlanta Braves had 22 hits in a 13-0 home win over the Washington Nationals. Braves starter John Smoltz won his ninth game, striking out seven in five innings. *Tom Glavine won his 297th game, pitching a one-hitter for six innings in a rain-shortened 2-0 New York Mets home victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.
