The New York Yankees won their seventh straight game with a 4-1 road victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday, pitcher Mike Mussina leading the way with five shutout innings.

Mussina (9-10), who had lost his spot in the starting rotation due to poor form, held the Blue Jays to five singles in winning for the first time in a month.

He struck out one and walked three in his 500th game as a Major Leaguer.

"I think I just reminded them that I'm still here and I think I can still pitch," the 38-year-old Mussina told reporters after he was drafted in to replace Roger Clemens, who has a sore elbow.

"Hopefully, the guys making those decisions will give me a chance to get back out there a couple of more times."

The Yankees, who trail the Boston Red Sox by five games in the American League East, had only four hits but made the most of them.

Hideki Matsui's first-inning double gave New York a 1-0 lead and the Yankees added another run later in the inning on a wild pitch.

"It's been a while since I was able to have a real quality at-bat like that," Matsui, who was battling a 2-for-31 slump, told reporters.

New York made it 4-0 in the fourth inning on Robinson Cano's two-run single with the bases loaded.

Toronto's run came in the eighth on a throwing error by Alex Rodriguez, who was 0-for-3 at the plate.

*David Ortiz's two-run, ninth-inning homer rallied the Boston Red Sox to a 5-4 home victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Oritz's homer, his second of the game, barely cleared the right field wall. He also had a three-run homer in the third to drive in all five of the Red Sox's runs.

*Garret Anderson homered and drove in five runs and Kelvim Escobar (17-7) won his 100th Major League game as the Los Angeles Angels pounded the Baltimore Orioles 18-6. The Angels had 14 hits and scored five runs in both the first and eighth innings.

*David DeJesus homered and drove in three runs as the Kansas City Royals ended a seven-game losing streak with a 6-3 home win over the Minnesota Twins.

*Yuniesky Betancourt's two-out, ninth-inning single lifted the Seattle Mariners to a 6-5 home victory over the Oakland Athletics.
