Seahawks beat Redskins to win pulsating game
2008-01-06
The Seattle Seahawks scored 22 fourth-quarter points to beat the Washington Redskins 35-14 in their NFL Wild Card game on Saturday and set up an NFC divisional play-off clash with the Green Bay Packers. The Seahawks held the Redskins scoreless for three quarters, taking the lead when Leonard Weaver ran the ball in from 17 yards four minutes into the game and they built their lead by half-time to 13-0 on two field goals by Josh Brown. However, after a tight three quarters, the fourth featured five touchdowns, four interceptions and a bizarre kick-off that the Redskins recovered on the Seahawks' 14 yard line, though Seattle hung on to advance. "The fourth quarter is when you have to go out and earn the money," said Marcus Trufant, who picked off Redskins quarterback Todd Collins halfway through the final quarter and returned it 78 yards for a touchdown and a 28-14 Seattle lead. It was the first interception Collins had thrown all season. The Redskins had ridden a wave of momentum and support into Seattle, having won four successive games to make the play-offs after an emotional November, when team mate Sean Taylor was killed during a break-in at his house. Early in the fourth quarter, after the Redskins scored two quick touchdowns to take a 14-13 lead and recovered a kick off on the Seahawks 14 yard line, it looked like the Redskins had regained their edge. However, Seattle's defense didn't budge, forcing a 30-yard field goal attempt four plays later which Washington kicker Shaun Suisham missed wide left. "It was a momentum-oriented game," Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren said. "We had it earlier; in the third quarter, they got it, and when they missed the field goal, we got it back." Redskins strong safety LaRon Landry picked off two passes from Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck in the fourth quarter. The first interception led to a 30-yard touchdown pass from Collins to Santana Moss and a 14-13 Redskins lead. That lead was short-lived, however, and Hasselbeck, who ended with 20 completions in 32 attempts for 229 yards, led a 42-yard drive that culminated in a 20-yard touchdown pass to D.J. Hackett and a 21-14 Seahawks lead before Trufant intercepted. Seahawks cornerback Jordan Babineaux then intercepted Collins late in the game and returned it 57 yards for a touchdown.
