Washington netminder Olie Kolzig celebrated victory in his 700th NHL game on Sunday after Mike Green scored 23 seconds into overtime to give the Capitals a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers.

The 37-year-old Kolzig made 31 saves to collect career victory No. 296, a win that lifted the Capitals into top spot in the Southeast division.

"He made, in the third period, some unbelievable saves and one in the first period where he had to stretch out," Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau told reporters.

Kolzig praised his team mates and said the performance showed the Capitals' potential.

"We've got a young exciting team, and you saw tonight playing the Rangers, what kind of electricity can be generated," he told reporters.

Washington's Alex Ovechkin scored once and had two assists, including Green's game winner. Ovechkin leads the league in goals (47) and points (76).

"When you have two of the most skilled players in the league out there, Alex and Alexander (Semin), everyone shoots the puck well, and whoever gets a chance to shoot it has a good chance of it going in," Green told reporters.

Ovechkin opened the scoring with a powerplay goal 2:28 into the first period. After Sean Avery and Chris Drury scored for New York, Capitals center Boyd Gordon tallied off an Ovechkin assist with 15 seconds left in the second to level the score at 2-2.

Neither team scored in the third period.

* Evgeni Malkin scored a goal and assisted on three others as the Pittsburgh Peguins beat the Philadelphia Flyers for the first time this season, winning 4-3 on home ice.

* Mathieu Schneider and Kent Huskins had second-period goals as the Anaheim Ducks edged the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 for a fourth successive win.

* Brent Burns's goal in the sixth round of a shootout led the Minnesota Wild to a 2-1 road win over the St. Louis Blues.

* Patrick O'Sullivan scored the deciding goal in a shootout and Anze Kopitar had two regulation goals in the Los Angeles Kings' 3-2 road win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

* Derek Roy scored twice in the Buffalo Sabres' 5-3 home win over the Florida Panthers. The game was halted for 15 minutes in the third period after Florida's Richard Zednik was cut in the neck by a team mate's skate. Zednik was in stable condition after undergoing surgery in a Buffalo hospital to close the laceration, the Panthers reported on their Web site (www.panthers.nhl.com)

* J.P. Dumont broke a 3-3 tie with the first of three Nashville goals in the third period and the Predators rolled to a 6-3 road win over the Phoenix Coyotes. Dumont also had two assists.
