Former eBay chief to run for California governor
2009-02-09
SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Former eBay chief executive Meg Whitman on Monday confirmed she plans to run for governor of California when Arnold Schwarzenegger's term ends in 2010. In a statement released by the 52-year-old Republican's office, Whitman said she had formed an exploratory committee to seek the nomination for governor because she "refused to stand by and watch California fail." Schwarzenegger, who is midway through his second and final term, is grappling with a multi-billion budget deficit that has left California's finances in crisis. "California faces challenges unlike any other time in its history -- a weak and faltering economy, massive job losses, and an exploding state budget deficit," Whitman said in a statement. "California is better than this, and I refuse to stand by and watch it fail. Now is the time for people across the state to join in a cause for change, excellence and a new California." Whitman, who before the global financial crisis was reported to have amassed a fortune worth more than 1.0 billion dollars, is regarded as a rising star of the Republican Party and served as co-chair of John McCain's presidential campaign last year.
